Laparoscopy

A less invasive surgery method with a quicker recovery time.

Fraser Valley Animal Hospital has been providing laparoscopic surgery for pets in Abbotsford and the greater Vancouver area since 2014. We are one of the very few practices in B.C. that offer laparoscopic surgeries for multiple procedures. To learn more about laparoscopy or to book an appointment, call us at 604-854-2313.

How is laparoscopic surgery different from traditional surgical techniques?

The most significant difference is that laparoscopies are minimally invasive. The incision made is smaller and includes three small holes. Through one incision, a camera is inserted to enlarge the organ, and the other two incisions help the surgeons maneuver and do the surgery.

What are the benefits of laparoscopic surgery?

Most pets can wake up the day after surgery without even knowing they had surgery. That is one of the benefits of laparoscopic surgeries that cause less pain and trauma post-surgery. These surgeries are outpatient procedures and thus, allow your pet to recover at home and have a faster recovery time. Smaller incisions also mean lesser bruising and fewer pain medications.

Will my pet have stitches?

Like most surgeries, laparoscopy also requires stitches. For most surgeries, we use absorbable sutures underneath the skin. These will dissolve independently and do not need to be removed later. Some surgeries require skin stitches. But in these cases also, the stitches need not be removed later.
